Virgin America Cleans Up for Earth Day

It was a beautiful sunny day with the sparkling ocean in the backdrop. About 20 volunteers from Virgin America / Menzies and one teammember from Primeflight set out to clean a section of the Fort Lauderdale beach in celebration of Earth Day 2010.

A highlight of the day was team members Meredith Gaskins and Francis “Frankie” Watson educating the volunteers about the initiatives of the Virgin America corporate Green Team and efforts we are making locally to support company goals.

After the clean-up, volunteers had a big appetite for the barbeque right on the beach. The menu included burgers, hotdogs, and homemade volcano cake (courtesy of John, GST Judy’s spouse) baked right on the beach.

Being green didn't stop with the beach clean-up. Using earth friendly bags, the teammates recycled all plastic items and certain paper items used in the festive feast. They also used reusable plastic cups and real silverware.

Artist Wendy Wischer signing posters accompanied by Tin LyArtists Meet and Greet at Lee Wagener Art Gallery (Terminal 2)

Broward Cultural Division's Public Art and Design Program invited members of the community to a 'Meet and Greet' with artists Wendy Wischer, Mary Lou Siefker, Suzanne Scherer and Pavel Ouporov on April 23, 2009 at the Lee Wagener Art Gallery.

Wendy Wischer was onsite to sign posters of her artwork, Parallel, presently wrapping the buses on the Rental Car Center's shuttle fleet that transports passengers between the airport's terminals and the rental car facility.

Parallel is a temporary art project using graphic design and hi-tech printed vinyl to wrap the airport's shuttle buses. The design is inspired by the mangrove tree, also known as the walking tree, which has its roots holding South Florida together.

Both Mary Lou Siefker, Journey Through Life with Paint; and Scherer and Ouporov's video installation artwork Tree Rain, are presently on display at the Lee Wagener Art Gallery.
