Commission Selects Runway
The Broward County Board of County Commissioners selected the 8,000 foot elevated south runway at a public hearing and deliberation held on Tuesday, June 5, 2007. After hearing comments from over 125 individuals, the Commissioners deliberated on the runway alternatives for the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. They voted 6 to 3 on Runway Alternative B1c . The hearing ended at 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday.
More than 1,300 people attended the public hearing in the Floridian Ballroom at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Broward County Convention Center.
Noise Monitoring Tour
Earlier that afternoon, the Commissioners visited two locations near the airport for a noise monitoring opportunity. They first traveled to 3640 S.W. 55 Avenue in the Town of Davie. Later, they traveled to 805 N.W. 13 Avenue in the city of Dania Beach.
Each location has a permanently installed noise-monitoring system that monitors and records airport noise levels year round. The purpose of the exercise was for the Commissioners to hear the difference in varying levels of noise caused by jet traffic.

Runway Alternatives Presented to Commissioners
On January 17, 2006, the Broward County Board of County Commissioners received a briefing on the seven runway alternatives that FAA will evaluate in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The EIS is necessary because of Broward County’s proposal to expand the south runway (Runway 9R/27L) to accommodate larger air carrier jet aircraft. After the briefing, the Commissioners asked questions and made comments. Based on the comments, the FAA will also evaluate an eighth runway alternative.
Aviation Department staff and consultants were on hand to answer questions after the workshop.

Environmental Impact Statement
On December 9, 2003, the Board of Broward County Commissioners approved an alternative for a modified south runway expansion, which stays within the confines of Northeast 7th Avenue. In addition, the Board also voted to continue with the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process. The EIS is a study mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which reviews the future environmental impacts of a proposed project, such as the runway expansion. The contract for this study was awarded to Landrum & Brown, and the Broward County Aviation Department issued the "Notice to Proceed" on July 29, 2004.
The FAA anticipates issuing a Draft EIS (DEIS) document 18 months after the publication of the NEPA required "Notice of Intent" in the Federal Register, which occurred on January 19, 2005. A key component of the study will be public involvement. The FAA hosted a public scoping workshop on February 24, 2005, to receive comments from the public.
