Purpose

Provide housing to low and low-to-moderate income residents of Broward County through Section 8 and Public Housing programs sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Created By

November 24, 1969 pursuant to Chapter 421.27 Public Housing, Chapter 422 Housing Cooperation Law, and Chapter 423 Tax Exemption of Housing Authorities, Florida Statutes, as amended.

The Board of County Commissioners of Broward County, on June 3, 1969, adopted a Resolution declaring that there is a need for a housing authority to function in Broward County; and requesting the Governor of the State of Florida to appoint the commissioners of the Broward County Housing Authority.

Membership

Five (5) members (volunteer commissioners).

Members are appointed by the Governor of Florida.

Members shall be qualified electors of Broward County.

No member shall be an officer or employee of the county. At least one member shall be a resident within the housing authority’s jurisdiction and a recipient of either Section 8 or Public Housing Assistance.

Terms

Four (4) years. Vacancies shall be filled for the remainder of the unexpired term. Members shall serve until a successor has been appointed.
