Commission on the Status of Women

Purpose

Serve in an advisory capacity to the Broward County Commission, the community and governmental and non-governmental subdivisions in Broward County, in respect to all matters pertaining to the status of women.

Make studies of existing county institutions, facilities, services and programs dealing with women or affecting women and, considering the future needs of the county, formulate and recommend plans and programs for dealing with the unique concerns and needs of women in the community.

Serve as a medium to bring about understanding and solution of the many complex problems involving the status of women in the community.

Shall be dedicated to identifying and resolving economic health, social, and all other issues concerning women’s lives through education and advocacy.

Broward County Ordinance #76-64, enacted December 14, 1976.

Amended by Ordinance #92-9, enacted April 14, 1992, increasing the membership to twenty-one.

Amended by Ordinance #2001-06, enacted February 13, 2001, reducing the membership from twenty-one to eighteen; providing that each Commissioner shall appoint two (2) members, one of whom shall reside within the appointing Commissioner’s district.

Amended by Ordinance #2005-02, enacted January 11, 2005, allowing the duties of this commission to be amended by ordinance or by resolution; amending the duties to include monitoring the County pay scale to ensure equal pay for women.

Amended by Ordinance #2009-31, enacted June 9, 2009, updating the purpose; stating that the terms of office shall be in accordance with the provisions of Section 1-233.

Membership

Eighteen (18) members.

Each Broward County Commissioner shall appoint two (2) members who shall be permanent residents and registered voters in Broward County; and one (1) of whom shall reside in the appointing Commissioner’s district.

Terms

Section 1-233 of Chapter 1, Article XII, Broward County Code of Ordinances, as amended from time to time.

Quorum

A majority of the total appointed board members.
