Florida Building Code - Construction Permitting

As mandated in the Florida Building Code, the Permitting, Licensing and Consumer Protection Division performs Florida Building Code plan reviews, inspections and permit issuances for new and existing construction in the unincorporated areas of Broward County and in several cities under contractual agreement.

Inspectors are scheduled on a daily basis by Chief Inspectors to perform inspections within the time frames as set forth in the building code.

In continuing efforts to streamline procedures, the Division has several programs in place, one of which is called the Prepaid Permit Fees Account, that enables contractors to set up an escrow account, depositing funds into an account that can be drawn on for issuance of permits in a more expeditious manner.

Florida Building Code - Code Enforcement

In order to maintain the health and safety for residents in the unincorporated area of Broward County, provisions relating to building without a permit, unsafe structures, unsecured and stagnant pools and minimum housing standards in the Florida Building Code, are enforced by the Florida Building Code Enforcement section of the Permitting, Licensing and Consumer Protection Division.

The program processes complaints received regarding infractions against the Florida Building Code and inspects existing buildings for unlicensed businesses and for issuance of Certificates of Use.  Staff in this program process case files, prepare advertisements, agendas, case summaries and notices of violation. In addition, this program administers special inspections and case files on items such as adult congregate living facilities, adult entertainment facilities, neighborhood housing surveys, neighborhood tours, area Asweeps@ and emergency response actions.

All inspectors assigned to this program must be certified as inspectors by the Board of Rules and Appeals and the State Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
