July is Parks and Recreation Month

Twenty-five years ago, the National Recreation and Park Association declared the month of July “Parks and Recreation Month.” As a result, the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division embraces the annual event and recently Florida Governor Charlie Christ also honored all parks with a proclamation, which stated, “Florida recognizes the benefits derived from quality public and private recreation and park resources at the local and state level.” More...

When she gave birth to her first child, Charlton, 24 years ago this past June, she learned he was diagnosed with Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome.

Have you ever admired Broward County’s tree canopy and noticed how favorably it compares to those in the counties north and south of us? The beauty of our County’s “curb appeal” is due in part to the fact that tree trimming businesses in Broward are required to be licensed and to pass a continuing education course every two years to reduce the incidence of “hat-racking,” overpruning and overlifting, all improper pruning methods that are common examples of tree abuse. The new Lauderdale Lakes Library/Educational and Cultural Center, located at 3580 W. Oakland Park Blvd. opened to the public on June 19.

Lauderdale Lakes Gets New Library, Educational and Cultural CenterThe two-story, 20,000 square-foot building includes a 10,000 square-foot library on the first floor with room to hold a 50,000 item collection operated by Broward County Libraries Division. The library's multi-purpose room can hold up to 75 people for a variety of community events and programs. The first floor has 19 computers with free internet access available to the public during library hours. It also is a free wireless Internet hotspot. The library is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m.; and Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The library is closed on Friday and Sunday. More...
